How difficult is it to make a career switch from finance to marketing?

I'm currently and MBA student with prior experience in investment banking looking to switch to a career in marketing post MBA.

The only answer:
  • How far away from finance do want to get? An internship (even if it's unpaid) can be a great first step especially if you want to get into consumer package goods or startup-land.

Another idea is a smoother transition - find a marketing organisation that will value your experience. Retail banks, credit cards, and brokerage houses do an awful lot of consumer marketing even if their "product" is basically a brand, an 800-number, and a monthly statement. Or get creative: if you have your heart set on marketing for a startup, for example, there are plenty of finance-related startups (New York-based Covestor is doing cool things and just got a bunch of funding from Union Square Ventures).
