CTO / Chief Architect
PathMotion seeks a CTO to manage our web application’s architecture and drive forward the development of the platform in line with users’ requirements.
Our approach is data driven, experimental, user-focused, and utilises rapid iterations. You may be interested in working with us if you have the following interests, each of which reflects some aspect of the products we’re developing:
- Large datasets, statistics, and algorithms
- Search, relevance, data extraction, and text mining problems
- Recommendation systems
- New approaches to data availability and access (OpenSocial, etc.)
- User behavior on the web
Responsibilities
- Manage development of core technologies based on information extraction theories and practices to revolutionise vertical search in careers. Develop algorithms, collect data, build models, analyse results, and refine methodologies.
- Manage the software development process and development group, setting short-term objectives and assessing progress. You will initially “roll up your sleeves” andalso code as you lead the existing development team, but as the company growsyou will recruit and coach additional team members.
- Work with Marketing to define the web experience roadmap based on consumer and product needs as well as market opportunities.
- Participate as a member of the senior management team in establishing governanceprocesses of direction and control to ensure that objectives are achieved, risks aremanaged appropriately, and the organisation’s resources are used responsibly.
Your success will be measured by your ability to improve the PathMotion career search experience, including search relevancy, breadth and depth of coverage of source data, and statistical accuracy.
Qualifications
- Degree in computer science or engineering.
- Hands-on experience designing, delivering and supporting large-scale applications and/or data systems.
- Strong experience with data modeling and production, from extraction to analysis, conversion, and maintenance. Experience with text mining problems preferred.
- Hands-on experience with XHTML, HTML, CSS, PHP5
- Deep experience with MySQL and large datasets
- Track record of making sound assumptions in order to constrain and solve ill-defined and complex problems.
- Experience leading dynamic teams; experience in a start up environment a plus.
- Must be a hands-on coder.
- Spoken French is a plus.

Web Engineer (Full Time)
We are looking for an outstanding application engineer with strong web-tier development skills and a burning desire to create a great product. Candidate has the desire to work directly with product and business teams to have direct influence on the direction and quality of the leading career search engine.
Responsibilities
Develop application features with a focus on the UI experience, contribute to interaction and visual design of user features, performance measurement and tuning, A/B testing. Successful candidates will be able to do middle tier development to support features and can work well with back-end infrastructure specialists.
Experience (required)
- Ability to do rapid prototyping of new features in parallel with design
- Passion for the development of high-quality web UI
- 4 years’ experience XHTML, HTML, CSS, PHP
- 4+ years’ experience working with and resolving cross-browser compatibility issues
- 4 years’ experience JavaScript/Ajax – deep knowledge of common JavaScript libraries and an ability to “do it by hand” when appropriate
- Front-end optimisation experience
- Ability to convert visual designs/wireframes into HTML
- MySQL, Unix
- Adaptability
Experience (ideal)
- 5 years web application development experience with at least 2 years experience at a high-traffic consumer web site.
- Iterative prototyping and live A/B testing to optimise user experience on a high volume consumer website.
- Experience with mid-tier technologies: Web Services, XML, API implementation REST/SOAP

Marketing & Product Management (Internship)
We are looking for interns who want to gain experience in online marketing and product development. To date, we have hosted interns from Berkeley, Cambridge, Harvard, Oxford, Wharton, and Yale.
Sample projects: Conceptualise and execute social media campaigns. Develop sales pitch documents for universities. Define criteria, research metrics, and calculate target list of best prospects. Track impressions, site usage, and conversion rates. Flexibility to help with bug checking during crunch periods.
Skills and experience required: Desire to learn how to launch a web site. Can think creatively about data and find patterns. Excellent written English and/or French. Maturity and flexibility. Avid Internet content consumer and participant (RSS, blogs, Facebook, Twitter). Knowledge of UK and/or French higher education market a plus. Conversational French a plus.
